Looking to go from fat to flat? Who isn’t, right?

The good news is that there are certain foods that can actually help you lose fat faster and reduce that dreaded bloated look.

Upping your exercise and sprucing up your diet will go a long way, but to get the most out of your fat loss e

Broken egg1. Eggs

If you want to lose some lard around the belly, then eggs are a great way to start your day. Personally, I eat eggs for breakfast more often than not. Some people ask, “Don’t you get fed up of eating eggs?” and I say, “Don’t you get fed up eating cereal.” However, what I could say is something along the lines of “Don’t you get fed up with that spare tyre round your waist”…I never would, but you get my point.

You see, most people start the day with a carb breakfast in the form of cereal, toast of porridge. None of which, will help you lose lard long term. Instead, enjoy a couple of eggs each morning for a protein boost, that’ll give you some staying power and load up on fat boosting vitamin D and B12 to help keep belly fat at bay.

cinnamon2. Cinnamon

Who doesn’t love the smell of cinnamon?! Unfortunately, your cinnamon pastries aren’t going to cut the mustard. However,  this spice was once more valuable than gold and the medicinal uses for cinnamon date back to the days of the Egyptians.

When it comes to weight loss and cinnamon,  research from Maryland USDA research center revealed a surprise. Cinnamon was found to lower blood sugar levels, which helps keep belly fat in check. As this discovery was ‘accidental’ the team went on to further investigate cinnamon and blood sugar.

In a separate study conducted on sixty adults diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes the researchers found that taking as little as one-quarter to two teaspoons a day of cinnamon dramatically changed the sufferers blood sugar levels and insulin output.

Lemons with leaves.3. Lemon

Most nutritionists and dietitians recommend starting your day with hot water and lemon. And for good reason, because this simple concoction packs a huge Vitamin C punch and is a good way to up your fluid intake.

Will it help you burn more chub? Well, not directly. You see, lemons although acidic in taste having an alkalizing effect on your body, which means you can rid of those pesky toxins easier and your bod can get rid of excess fat easier.

Do yourself a favor and get into the habit of drinking lemony water every morning. :)

Heap ground Curry (Madras Curry) isolated on white background.4. Turmeric

This brilliant yellow spice not only adds a splash of color to your food, but has numeous health benefits to boot.

The primary antioxidant in turmeric is called curcumin and helps reduce inflammation. While increasing your intake of turmeric isn’t a lone strategy for weight loss, it may help you mitigate the inflammation associated with obesity and give you a wee boost on your fat burning mission.

Leafy Green Vegetables Isolated5. Green Veg

There’s no getting away from it. Vegetables are good for us and if you want to melt away the inches you need to fill up on your greens!

Think spinach, kale, broccoli, etc. These bad boys not only contain plenty of fibre, but they also help reduce the overall acidity of your body, which if you didn’t already know, is a bad thing.

Stress, poor diet and lack of sleep all combine to increase the acidity of your blood and when this happens your body struggles to deal with all the toxins and becomes more susceptible to illness and disease, as well as weight gain. So, when it comes to the leafy greens you can fill your boots!

Avocado isolated on a white background.6. Avocado

Who’d have thought it, eh? The little old avocado helps you burn belly fat? Of course, a bowl of guacamole and a bag of chips isn’t the way to go, but but a sliced fresh avocado gives you about 15g of fibre and is a great way to keep hunger at bay.

Plus, enjoy just ¼ cup of avocado and you’ll be rewarded with a full serving of monounsatrated fatty acids (MUFAs) which help burn belly fat.

I’ll eat avocado one of two ways normally. The first being with a salad – boring I know, but the second is a great way to load up on goodness…a smoothie. I’ll throw half a ripe avocado into a blender along with some ice, coconut milk, spinach (or kale) and peanut butter. Whizz up and job done. A healthy, fat burning, smoothie. Nom, nom, nom!

Oh and if you haven’t tried making avocado chocolate moose, give it a whirl. It’s all the rage now :)

Branch with olives and a bottle of olive oil isolated on white7. Olive oil

“Olive oil is high in fat and calories though, Gavin?!” Yes, I know this, but that doesn’t stop it appearing on our fat fighting food list. You see…

The monounsaturated fats found in olive oil could potentially switch on genes related to the burning and storage of fat. Monounsaturated fats also help control blood sugar levels, which play a huge role in keeping hunger at bay and reducing belly fat.

A study in Diabetes Care showed that partial replacement of complex digestible carbohydrates with monounsaturated fatty acids in the diet of those with Type 2 diabetes helped maintain blood sugar levels and improve blood lipids – think of a Mediterranean diet without all the pasta and you’ll be on the right track.

Now, before you pour olive oil all over your food in the hopes of a slimmer waistline, keep in mind that a serving size of olive oil is one tablespoon, which has 120 calories. So…

While I often talk about managing your hormones effectively through the food you eat and an exercise plan that does more than have you plod along on a treadmill or cross-trainer, you’ve still gotta watch the calories from time to time to get the most from your fat loss plan, even if the foods you are eating are considered “healthy”.
